In her new book, BAKING UNPLUGGED, Rees shows that with a good grasp of basic proportions and some simple techniques anyone can become a great baker.After training in New York as a pastry chef, Nicole Rees got her start in food publishing as an editorial assistant for Chocolatier and Pastry Art & Design magazines. Laura Frankel is the executive chef of Wolfgang Puck’s restaurant in the (Jewish) Spertus Museum in Chicago. She was the founder and co-owner of Shallots, recognized as one of the top restaurants in Chicago and one of the best kosher restaurants in the United States. After working in hotel and restaurant kitchens, Frankel had a family and began maintaining a kosher home kitchen. Unable to find a restaurant venue for quality kosher cooking, she opened Shallots in 1999, a restaurant offering kosher fine dining with a produce-driven menu. TOP CHEF STEPHANIE IZARD was the winner of the fourth season of BRAVO network's cooking show, "Top Chef." She was the first female winner in four seasons of the competition. In addition, Stephanie was the first Top Chef to both win four elimination challenges and to be at the top of elimination challenges a total of 10 times. She also jointly held the record of most number of elimination challenge wins in "Top Chef" history, until this record was beaten by season 6 contestant Kevin Gillespie, with five elimination challenge wins. On the season 4 Top Chef Reunion Special that aired on June 18, 2008, Izard won the viewer-elected Fan Favorite title, receiving a $10,000 prize in addition to her Top Chef title and prizes. This was the first time the Top Chef was also the fan favorite. Prior to appearing on "Top Chef," Stephanie was Chef/Owner of "Scylla" restaurant in Chicago, which she sold in 2007. Mother's Day is almost a week away and many of us are making plans to take Mom out on the town or to send her roses of love. ART AND SOUL! Chef Art Smith began his career with two internships at the Greenbrier Resort, then attended the prestigious Walt Disney Magic Kingdom college program. Following graduation, he was executive chef for Gov. Bob Graham (Florida) and his wife, Adele, then spanned the globe and cooked extensively in Europe and Africa for families that included celebrities and politicians. After being a chef on the American European Express train, he settled in Chicago, and began teaching at Williams-Sonoma, later serving as special event chef for Martha Stewart Living magazine. In 1997, he began a ten-year long employment as personal chef for Oprah Winfrey and Stedman Graham, and is still specialty chef for Ms. Winfrey's biggest events. Art received the James Beard Foundation "Humanitarian of the Year" award in 2007, and another for "Best Cookbook," for his "Back To The Table: The Reunion of Food and Family," in 2002. He is a contributing editor to "O," (the Oprah magazine) as well as the food section of oprah.com, and has appeared on "The Today Show," "Good Day Live," as a judge on "Iron Chef America," and most recently on "Top Chef Masters." In 2003, Art and life partner, artist Jesus Salguiero, established "Common Threads," a nonprofit organization to educate children on cultural diversity, nutrition, and physical well being through cooking and the arts.
